Books

I am the author and/or coauthor of six books: Nassau Plantation; The Evolution of a Texas German Slave Plantation, (Denton: University of North Texas Press, 2009); Friedrichsburg; The Colony of the German Fürstenverein, (Austin: University of Texas Press, 2011); an annotated translation of Detlef Dunt’s Reise nach Texas in 1834 [Sojourn to Texas in 1834] (Austin: University of Texas Press, 2015); and No Hope for Heaven; No Fear of Hell: The Stafford/Townsend Feud in Colorado County, (Denton: University of North Texas Press, 2016). My latest book, an annotated translation of W.A. Trenckmann’s Texas German novel, Die Lateiner am Possum Creek [The Forty-Eighters on Possum Creek; A Texas Civil War Story], is scheduled for release in April/May 2020 and is already listed in the Texas A&M Consortium catalog.

Friedrichsburg received the Summerfield G. Roberts award for the best book on Texas history for the year 2012.

I also contributed a chapter on European immigration in Texas in the 19th century to a college textbook entitled Understanding Texas History. (University of Oklahoma Press, September, 2014.)

I am working on several other books at the present including a comprehensive history of the Society for the Protection of German Emigrants in Texas.

In the spring of 2016 I was voted a fellow of the Texas Institute of Letters.
