Embark on a journey through the vibrant and often perilous history of Colorado County, one of Stephen F. Austin’s original colonies. This rugged frontier was teeming with heroes, scoundrels, entrepreneurs, corrupt lawmen, and pious visionaries.
For the past 20 years, the Nesbitt Memorial Library Foundation of Columbus, Texas, has enchanted visitors with a nighttime cemetery tour. This walking tour featured colorful actors and engaging guides, bringing to life the famous and infamous characters of Colorado County’s past.
Drawing from historic records in the Nesbitt Memorial Library archives, these real-life stories are told through the voices of the historic individuals themselves. Some tales are tragic, others stretch the bounds of imagination, and still others will leave you laughing out loud. Accompanied by numerous never-before-seen photographs, this collection of fact-based stories makes the past come alive like never before.
As the popularity of the cemetery tour grew, it became clear that these stories should be accessible to the community. After all, it was their family members, friends, and elected officials who lived this history. For those just passing through, they too can celebrate the triumphs, losses, and determination of those who came before. Thus, the book Live Oaks and Dead Folks was born.
